Notice of Public Hearing - 4/14/2021 6:15PM

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE, that pursuant to a resolution adopted by the TOWN BOARD of the Town of East Greenbush, the Town Board shall hold a public hearing to receive public comment on a proposed local law on April 14, 2021, at 6:15 P.M., at Town Hall located at 225 Columbia Turnpike in the Town of East Greenbush, or by virtual means, to consider a local law. At that hearing, the Town Board shall receive comments from the public about a proposed local law as follows:

A local law of the town of East Greenbush, Rensselaer County, New York, amending Local Law No. 3 of the year 1982, to provide that in computing income eligibility for the senior citizen real property tax exemption, any income shall be offset by all medical and prescription drugs expenses actually paid which were not reimbursed or paid for by insurance, and amending Local Law No. 1 of the year 2004, to modify the maximum income eligibility levels for such real property tax exemption.

Currently, East Greenbush provides that senior citizens owning and residing in residential real property in the Town may qualify for a reduction of Town-imposed property taxes, based upon their income. The Town code provides a scaled percentage of value exempt from Town taxation up to 50%, based upon the income of the property owner(s). The law sets forth a definition of what constitutes “income” for the purposes of obtaining such an exemption. This amendment to the local law would provide that any income of the applicant(s) would be offset by all medical and prescription drug expenses actually paid by the applicant which were not reimbursed or paid for by insurance.

In addition, East Greenbush now provides for a maximum annual income of $32,400.00 to be eligible for a senior citizen exemption from Town property taxes. This local law would increase that amount to $37,400.00, pursuant to State Law, and would also authorize the Town Board, by resolution, to change the maximum income and the percentages of exemption to be allowed in the future.

A copy of the local law may be inspected at the Office of the Town Clerk during regular business hours. Local Law Draft
