REAL PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION FOR QUALIFIED COLD WAR VETERANS - Click to View Proposed Local Law
NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING PLEASE TAKE NOTICE, that pursuant to a resolution of the Town Board of the Town of East Greenbush, a public hearing shall be held at the East Greenbush Town Hall, 225 Columbia Turnpike, Rensselaer, New York at 5:45 p.m. on August 14, 2019. The purpose of the public hearing will be to accept public comment on proposed local law number 3 of 2019.
The proposed local law would expand the real property tax exemption for qualified Cold War veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States. By local law number 4 of 2008, the Town enacted a local law providing that qualifying residential real property owned by a Cold War veteran, as defined in Section 458 and 458-a of the New York State Real Property Tax law, would be exempt from town taxation to the extent of 10% of the assessed value of such property, provided that the exemption would not exceed $8,000.00 or the product of $8,000.00 multiplied by the latest state equalization rate.
The proposed local law leaves the definitions and the procedures for applying for the exemption substantially the same. However, the amount of the total available exemption is raised to $30,000.00, or the product of $30,000.00 multiplied by the latest state equalization rate. The proposed local law will take effect immediately, and will apply to town taxes levied in 2020.
The Town Board will accept public comment on this proposal at the date and time set forth above.
A full copy of the local law can be reviewed on the Town of East Greenbush website. In addition, the local law can be reviewed at the offices of the East Greenbush Town Clerk, during regular business hours.
