REAL PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION FOR QUALIFIED ALTERNATIVE WARTIME VETERANS - Click to View Proposed Local Law
NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING PLEASE TAKE NOTICE, that pursuant to a resolution of the Town Board of the Town of East Greenbush, a public hearing shall be held at the East Greenbush Town Hall, 225 Columbia Turnpike, Rensselaer, New York at 5:45 p.m. on August 14, 2019. The purpose of the public hearing will be to accept public comment on proposed local law number 4 of 2019.
The proposed local law would expand the real property tax exemption for qualified Alternative Wartime Veterans by local law number 2 of 2007, the Town enacted a local law providing that qualifying residential real property owned by a veteran, who served during a period of war, would be exempt from town taxation to the extent of 15% of the assessed value of that property, provided that the exemption would not exceed $27,000.00 or the product of $27,000.00 multiplied by the latest state equalization rate. A combat veteran could receive an additional exemption of up to $18,000.00. A disabled veteran could receive an exemption of up to $90,000.00.
The proposed local law leaves the definitions and the procedures for applying for the various exemptions substantially the same. However, the amount of the total basic exemption is raised to $45,000.00, or the product of $45,000.00 multiplied by the latest state equalization rate. The combat veteran would be entitled to an additional exemption up to $30,000.00. In addition, for service-disabled veterans, the exemption is increased from $90,000.00 to $150,000.00. The proposed local law will take effect immediately, and will apply to town taxes levied in 2020.
The Town Board will accept public comment on this proposal at the date and time set forth above.
