The Town of East Greenbush is located in Southern Rensselaer County. East Greenbush covers a total area of 24.4 square miles with a population of approximately 16,650 residents. The East Greenbush Police Department consists of 25 Full Time Sworn members, 8 Full Time Dispatchers and 1 Administrative Assistant. The Town of East Greenbush borders the Town of North Greenbush and the City of Rensselaer and the Hudson River. Interstate 90 runs through the town (Approx. 3 miles) as well as State Routes 9&20, 151& 4.

The Law Enforcement Division consists of Full Time Sworn Police Officers including the Chief of Police, 4 Patrol Sergeants, 2 Detectives including a Detective Sergeant and 1 School Resource Officer (SRO) who serves the East Greenbush Central School District. The Communications Division is staffed by 8 full time dispatchers and 10 part time dispatchers. The Communications operates a primary 911 PSAP for all Town Emergency Services. The East Greenbush Police Department is an Accredited Police Agency by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.

Members of the East Greenbush Police Department are hired from the Rensselaer County Civil Service list and attend the Zone 5 Regional Law Enforcement Academy located in Schenectady, New York. The academy is 6 month’s in length, and officers are taught courses which include Penal Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law, Criminal Procedure Law, Search & Seizure, interviewing and interrogations, juvenile law, defensive tactics, emergency vehicle operation control, firearms training and certification, and survival techniques.
The Zone 5 Training Academy serves Albany, Fulton, Greene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren and Washington Counties, New York. Members of the East Greenbush Emergency Communications Center are also hired from the Rensselaer County Civil Service list. After getting through the hiring process recruits observe seasoned dispatchers and learn the ins and out of call taking and dispatching of Police,Fire,EMS and Public Works. The East Greenbush Emergency Communications Center also provides Part-Time opportunities. Part-Time dispatchers work hand and hand with Full-Time dispatchers, answer calls and dispatch the proper authorities.
